Desert Plant Walk: Medicinal Plants of Riparian Areas

Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch

This guided plant walk takes place along the waterways of the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch and focuses on medicinal plants that grow in the wetter corridors of the Sonoran Desert. Riparian areas support a distinct group of plants adapted to seasonal flooding, groundwater access, and desert heat, offering a different learning context than upland desert environments.

This outdoor walk is designed for those interested in learning how desert plants are identified and worked with in herbal practice. We will observe plants in their growing environment and discuss how they have traditionally been used for food, medicine, and daily living.

Some plants discussed may also appear on other Desert Plant Walks throughout the season. Seeing the same species in different habitats supports stronger recognition and practical plant knowledge.

This is an observational and educational walk. No harvesting will take place.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to identify medicinal and edible plants common to the Sonoran Desert
  • Traditional and practical ways these plants have been used in herbal practice
  • Preparation methods commonly discussed in herbal medicine
  • Safety considerations, interactions, and contraindications
  • Principles of ethical foraging and respectful land relationships

Access & Terrain Requirements

  • Participants must be able to walk approximately one mile on maintained park pathways
  • The route includes a combination of paved walkways and compacted dirt trails
  • Terrain is generally level, with some uneven surfaces and soft ground near water features
  • Terrain varies throughout the walk, and it may not be suitable for scooters or mobility aids that require consistently smooth, paved surfaces.
  • Plant walks take place in desert terrain. For safety reasons, attendance is limited to adults and teens. Dogs and young children are not permitted.

·

What to Bring

  • Closed-toe shoes suitable for desert terrain
  • Water appropriate for the season
  • Sun protection as needed
  • Please bring any personal medical supplies you may require. Participants with bee allergies should carry an epinephrine pen.

Weather & Outdoor Considerations

This is an outdoor event and will take place rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe. In cases of extreme heat, storms, wildfire activity, or unsafe trail conditions, the walk may be rescheduled or canceled. If Desert Moon Botanicals cancels the walk, participants will receive a full refund.

Registration & Attendance

Advance registration is required, and space is limited to maintain a comfortable group size. Some walks require a minimum number of participants. If the minimum is not met, the walk will be canceled, and registered participants will receive a full refund.

Exact meeting details and arrival instructions will be emailed to registered participants 24 hours prior to the walk.

After the Walk

Following the walk, Jennifer will have a small selection of Sonoran Desert herbal preparations from Desert Moon Botanicals available for purchase.
